Putting a value on your business equipment

Underinsurance can have unexpected and severe consequences for some businesses

Many businesses make understandable mistakes when trying to determine their plant and machinery sums insured

Setting the correct sum insured requires careful consideration of a number of factors, and a thorough knowledge of the policy terms

For businesses that rely on key equipment, underinsurance can have unexpected and severe consequences. Simply using the purchase cost for valuing assets is a mistake made by many, resulting in inaccurate sums insured and inadequate claim settlements.

Looking after employees

Keeping employees healthy and safe is vital to every business. It can be done in 5 easy steps...

Here's how our friends at Aviva Insurance say employers can look after their employees:

1.   Risk Assessment

Your customers need to properly plan the work they are undertaking so all the necessary controls are in place to prevent accidents and injuries. How could the activity of their business put employees at risk?

2.  Health and Safety policy document

Once you have decided what could go wrong and how to prevent it you need to ensure that employees abide by the health and safety requirements. Create a health and safety document which outlines the businesses commitment, responsibilities and general rules on how to work safety. Then make sure this is shared with all employees.

The perils of underinsurance

Major loss events reveal underinsurance dangers

A major loss incident, such as a fire or a flood, can highlight the perils of underinsurance at the worst possible time – usually when it’s too late to do anything about it.

And underinsurance is a growing problem. It may occur because a firm’s assets have risen in value without them fully realising or because a firm has underestimated the value of their assets.

Underinsurance left specialist manufacturer in ashes

After a fire at a manufacturing plant, the initial cost of the claim by the manufacturer was estimated to be over £25m with the possibility of further increases.

Abolition of Driving Licence Paper Counterpart: What You Need to Know

Here is the advice from one of our insurers intended to help you understand the new rules:

You may have heard that on the 8th June 2015, the paper counterpart to the photo card driving licence was abolished. The DVLA is advising that drivers destroy the paper counterpart as this will no longer be valid and just retain the photo card driving licence. It is worth noting this will only apply to drivers with both a photo card and paper counterpart licence. Paper driving licences issued before the photo card was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed.

The paper counterpart has been used to display driving convictions and penalty points (endorsements) since 1998. As they will no longer be valid and all this information will now be recorded electronically, the DVLA has introduced an online solution for customers to obtain their licence information. The online 'Share Driving Licence' function allows a customer to obtain their licence details and then provide to third parties requesting it such as hire car companies. More information about this can be found by visiting www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
